What Is OMPT? A Complete Guide to the Online Mathematics Placement Test

Almost every year, thousands of incoming students at Dutch universities are asked to prove their mathematics level before starting a program in economics, business, or a STEM field. The tool most universities rely on for this is the Online Mathematics Placement Test, widely known by its acronym OMPT.

The OMPT is a proctored, computer-based exam that measures how comfortable a student is with core mathematical topics — algebra, functions, differentiation, integration, and basic statistics — at the level expected for a bachelor's program. Universities use the result either as an admission requirement or as a placement tool to decide whether a student needs a preparatory math course before their first semester.

Why does it exist?

Not every high school curriculum in Europe covers the same depth of mathematics. A university offering an economics or business bachelor's program needs a fast, standardised way to check that every admitted student — regardless of where they went to school — can follow first-year quantitative courses. Rather than each university designing its own math entrance exam, most adopted the same shared testing format, which is why you'll see the same "OMPT" name referenced across many different Dutch university admission pages.

What does the exam actually cover?

Typical topics include: linear and quadratic equations, exponents and logarithms, functions and graphs, basic differentiation and integration, and elementary probability. The exact mix depends on which variant of the test a university has selected.
